Twister Intercept
Regional Storm Communications Network Initiative
Building a Connected VHF & Starlink Communications System for SKYWARN Spotters and Emergency Response Teams
Stronger Together. Safer Together.
Twister Intercept is building a regional communications network designed to support SKYWARN spotters, storm response teams, emergency responders, and disaster operations throughout the Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas storm corridor.
This project will establish a connected VHF radio network linked through Starlink internet services and Radio over IP (ROIP) technology to provide reliable communications during severe weather events and disasters.
The goal is to create a resilient communications system that continues operating when cellular networks fail or become overloaded.
Mission Statement
To provide reliable, redundant, and rapid communications support for storm spotters, disaster response teams, and communities during severe weather and emergency situations.
Why This Network Matters
Severe weather does not stop at state lines, and communications should not either.
Tornado outbreaks, hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, and severe thunderstorms often cause communication failures that impact emergency response efforts. This project aims to provide a dependable communications platform that supports:
SKYWARN storm spotters
Storm chasing and intercept teams
Volunteer response groups
Emergency management support
Community response operations
Mobile command operations
Disaster relief coordination
By linking repeater sites with Starlink satellite internet, this system will maintain communications even in remote or damaged areas.
How the System Works
Field Radio → Local VHF Repeater → ROIP Gateway → Starlink Internet → Dispatch / Network Hub
The system combines traditional VHF radio communications with modern satellite internet technology to create a flexible and scalable communications network.
